Awakenings Foundation

About

The Foundation was founded in 1991 and has been operating with an innovative mission since 1995. Together with its partners, it has launched community psychiatry in Hungary and many NGOs, including the first national organization for the protection of patient interests, the Psychiatric Interest Protection Forum, over the past two decades.

One of its main goals is the fight against discrimination and stigmatisation of those involved and social inclusion. Psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers often deal with the same patient and their relatives, and those interested can join several self-help groups; the ultimate mission is to help those affected to recover. The road to recovery is accompanied by both professionals and self-help groups in which informal conversations are taking place and they offer assistance in developing coping mechanisms – the gorups range from trauma processing to sobriety maintenance.
