The Mental Health Social Facilitator Project is run by the training agency PerFormat s.r.l. in collaboration with L’Alba Association, based in Pisa. The Project aims to support collaboration between mental health service users, public and private health and social services, and local resources (family networks, social networks, and third sector) in order to raise the level of well-being and health of the host community through the promotion and active involvement of Social Facilitators. At the heart of the project is the training of the Social Facilitator, a person with a background of mental distress, at a good point in his or her own recovery, who, through appropriate training and ongoing supervision activities, becomes capable of redefining his or her own suffering as a surplus value in order to use it professionally in supporting the integration, socialization and job placement of people who are experiencing mental distress. The user qualified as a Social Facilitator becomes an expert in the helping relationship, in supporting recovery processes and offering true peer support, working in a team with other health professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, psychiatric rehabilitators, educators, social workers, counselors …).
