The Weerklank foundation was founded in 1988 after the first congress for and by Voice Hearers in 1987. At this congress, voice hearers shared their experiences and decided to unite. Self-help groups were also established: Voice Hearers help each other and talk about the problems that hearing voices entails. Hearing voices and other special sensory experiences can be related to someone’s life history. Breaking through the prejudice “hearing voices is crazy or psychiatrically ill” contributes to better care and ensures more understanding and respect. Talking about your own experiences can help to bring people out of their isolation, they find resonance with each other.
